Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used forms of medicine in the world. Originating in China more than 2,500 years ago, acupuncture is currently one of the most thoroughly researched, practiced, and respected forms of complementary medicine available anywhere.
According to some basic tenets of Chinese Medicine, your overall health is determined by the quality of the Qi flow through the natural pathways (what we call channels) of your body. Qi is a term for the flow of life force energy throughout the body. Acupuncture uses a variety of techniques, including placing very thin, sterile, single-use needles into specific points on the body to stimulate and improve Qi flow. The many benefits of acupuncture include:
Common reasons to receive acupuncture include:
Cupping has been a part of Chinese Medicine for over 2,500 years. It relieves aches and pains, improves circulation, and also helps with respiratory and digestive issues. A specialized glass or silicone cup is placed onto specific points on your body, and the suction created opens pores and pathways to relieve stagnation — the vacuum from the cups draws fresh blood to that area of your body, which facilitates the cleansing and improved movement of Qi.
Gua Sha is the act of rubbing the skin with a smooth and hard tool (typically a soup spoon) to increase blood flow and relieve tension in an area. There may be some slight discomfort but the end result is a reduction in pain and facilitation of healing.
Tui Na is literally translated as "grasp and knead". It is a Chinese hands-on modality to normalize the body's physiological function and minimize pain perception. This technique is used to reduce fascial tension, decrease pain and improve well being.
Moxibustion is another ancient technique that involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to facilitate healing and health. Indirect moxibustion is practiced at Koru Acupuncture which means the herb is burned near the skin, not directly on it which minimizes the risk of burns. The purpose of moxibustion is to warm a specific region or boost an acupuncture point, move blood, stimulate Qi, and enhance your overall vitality and health.
